Delaware Solid Waste Authority (DSWA) Landfill Operations
Company Name: Delaware Solid Waste Authority
Location: Sandtown, Delaware
Type of Work: Landfill Operations
Delivery Method: Unit Price Contract
The Central Landfill operation is an annual, renewable contract for G&L to operate, perform maintenance, construction services, and final capping at this 22 acre site in central Delaware near Sandtown. The landfill takes in approximately 250,000 tons of trash per year from all around the State of Delaware.
G&L has provided operations services at the landfill since its inception in the mid 1980’s. In 2002, DSWA began a construction and demolition (C&D) recycling program that resulted in more than 40,000 tons of C&D waste being put into constructive reuse. DSWA collects the material at its landfill and ships it to a Baltimore or Philadelphia company that processes the construction waste by recovering wood, aggregates, and metals and removing other unwanted debris prior to shredding and screening. The processed material is then returned to DSWA and used as daily cover material or on roadways throughout the landfills in place of stone.
This innovative program saves landfill space and also helps conserve natural resources while improving the physical operation at the landfill.
