Estimator Job Description and Requirements

Education Requirement: High School Diploma or Equal with Two Years Field Experience. An AS or BS in Engineering or Business is Preferred.

Physical Requirement: Able to pick up 10 lbs./Move full range of motions

General Description:

  • The Estimator is primarily accountable for developing a responsible cost estimate for projects of various scope, size, and complexity. They are further charged with assessing risks, applying markups, preparing bid documents, and submitting proposals.
  • Required skills include plan reading, specification reading, and contract language interpretation.
  • Must be able to operate company’s software (HeavyBid, Microsoft Office, etc.) and computer driven hardware associated with producing plans, documents, estimates, material take off, transmit request and documents, and all items associated with estimating.
  • Must be able to neatly document bid information.
  • Must visit bid locations to determine all details of the project.
  • Prepare and maintain a directory of suppliers, contractors and subcontractors.
  • Follow up with customer to understand company’s position after the bid.
  • Predict the expense of future projects or products by analyzing monetary costs and other factors.
  • Aid management in bidding on or determining price of product or service.
  • Break down all expenses related to a project including materials, labor, and other resources.
  • Plan project budgets.
  • Review preliminary plans thoroughly.
  • Perform onsite investigations before, during, and after project.
  • Work with engineers to interpret blueprints or conceptual drawings.
  • Calculate standard labor hours necessary to produce units or to complete project.
